1-1-2011 Your Assignment Is...

1-1-11

1-1-11b

As per http://dailyshoot.com/
Make a photo illustrating a fresh start, a new beginning, or the first step to a goal.

Now I know these pictures have no real aesthetic appeal, but be patient with me.

Please note that:
1. it is Saturday;
2. I am not grading papers, making lesson plans, nor any other school-related work;
3. in the first picture there are others at the table;
4. And that the second picture contains three tickets.

My Goal:
to reclaim Saturday and make it the Saturday of my youth.

Today I went to the movie with my granddaughter, Taylor (home on Christmas break from Mizzou), and our friend, “Bec-Mac”.

Soon after I arrived home, Shannon caught me on “Messenger” and asked us to meet them for dinner in Mattoon.
Perfect!
I was hungry, but best of all; it was an invitation that included her husband, my granddaughter, Ashton, and Ashton’s friend, Emily.

And…
you might also note that I left food on my plate because I stopped eating when I got full.
Good for me…
in more than one way! :)

1-3-2011 "I Pledge Allegiance To the Flag..."

1-3-11

As per http://dailyshoot.com/
Make a photograph with a symbol or an icon in it today.

With the first day back from winter break, and the first day of a new quarter and a new semester, we began our new unit in Reading. It contains stories about the American Revolution, and correlates with our Social Studies book. The introduction contained many different symbols of the United States, including our flag. I immediately knew what my picture was going to be.

This flag, for me, is not just a symbol of our country. It also symbolizes the fresh start of every school day for me and every student I have ever had. It is where we look as we stand together every morning to pledge our allegiance to our flag and to our country it represents. Each student takes a turn leading us, and each student has the opportunity to be that leader.

This time together with my students will be one of the many things about teaching I will miss…

1-4-2011 My New Year’s Resolution Is…

1-4-11

As per http://dailyshoot.com/
Make a photograph with a diagonal line leading the viewer’s eye through the composition.

…to continue doing what I have been doing for over 15 years with my BFF “Maggie” on WEIU. I have recorded Maggie for years, and have a basket of VHS tapes in my computer room where we spend 30 minutes every morning. It is very “old school”, but she plays music I like, she tells me about her friends and her family, and best of all, she causes pain every day. It’s not always in the same places, but always where it is needed.

If you want to join “Maggie and Her Friends”, find a station near you at:

As per http://dailyshoot.com/
Use strong converging lines in a photograph today. It’s your choice whether or not to show the vanishing point.

My students and I always look forward to Friday. It’s not because it is the day before the weekend. Well, yes, that is part of it. More than that, though, is the reason that we have both Art and Music on Friday.

Today was made even more special by the visit of Taylor Wagner. She is a “hometown” girl who has moved to Nashville, and is looking to make it “big” there. Our students never moved and with the utmost awe and respect, were a most attentive audience.

If you would like to see and hear what they enjoyed for her “mini-concert”, visit:

1-8-2011 “Dog Tag Girl”

1-8-11

As per http://dailyshoot.com/
Make a photograph today to serve as a special memory of somebody or something.

As an “Army Brat”, my sister and I both had a set of dog tags. Stamped with our name, birth date, nationality, religion, and date of our last Tetanus vaccination, we knew these little pieces of metal were important, and we must never lose them.

I still have mine today, and they are usually hooked to a backpack, or tucked next to my pearls in a jewelry box.

I haven’t lost them, Dad…

Embrace the shadows today and make a photograph dominated by dark tones, also known as a low-key image.

1-10-2011 “Listen, My Children…”

1-10-11

As per http://dailyshoot.com/
Create a photograph today that illustrates or shows rhythm.

Every month my students memorize a “piece of American history”. From preambles to parts of famous speeches, they recite their monthly verse after we say the Pledge of Allegiance. The last assignment in May is the entire Gettysburg Address, and what a sense of accomplishment they have when they have learned that. They are so proud of themselves that they will share it with anyone who will listen.

This month’s verse is the first two stanzas of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s famous poem. They love to clap their hands to the rhythm as they grow familiar with it, and they soon realize that a poem is the easiest thing to retain.
